We are writing for various purposes, such as finish assignments, identify ourselves, record life, contact friends, reflect thoughts or express feelings. For students, daily assignments often need to be presented by writing. Furthermore, when they start to work, how to communicate with fellows, employers, or client through emails or text messages are also dependent on their writing experience. Thus, writing is one of the bases to support students’ academic study and future work. From an academic purpose, according to Vacca and Vacca (2013), writing activates learning by helping students to explore, clarify, and think deeply about the ideas and concepts they encounter in reading.

The following link is related to a twitter event to celebrate the National Day on Writing (October 20, 2011) organized by the New York Times Learning Network, the National Writing Project, Edutopia, and Figment. I found the comments are worth being noticed to learn more about people's purposes of writing.
